Wycombe Swan Town Hall : 27—29 September 2007 : Euripides’ The Phoenician Women adapted by Mark Oldknow
“Another tour de force by Tight Fit Theatre”
- Buckinghamshire Advertiser
“Quite splendid. Marvellous”
- Bucks Free Press
Tight Fit Theatre return to the Swan with one of the finest Greek tragedies in the canon. Mark Oldknow's stunning adaptation received critical acclaim in its previous outing in 2000. The Buckinghamshire Advertiser described it as "a tour de force" with the Bucks Free Press adding "fantastically chilling". In this new production Oldknow brings together an all female company once again to tell the story of the fall of Thebes and the tragic consequences for the house of Oedipus.
Euripides remains one of the most exciting playwrights of Ancient Greece with a very modern feel to his work. The themes of sibling rivalry and futile war resonate as clearly today as they did in his time. The story combines the Sophocles Oedipus trilogy, effectively taking all the best bits and amalgamating them into one play.
Oldknow's work at the Wycombe Swan has always been of the highest quality and has left audiences spellbound by its theatricality and dramatic impact. Phoenician Women will be no exception. Recent hits from the company, resident at the Wycombe Swan, are last season's magical Midsummer Night's Dream and Blue Remembered Hills. Even if Greek tragedy isn't normally your cup of tea we recommend you book to see this original and dynamic company do what they do best. Classic theatre. More...
